Eating at School

Welcome to the Catering Staff section of Whitchurch CE Junior School. We pride ourselves on being friendly and approachable and would like to think that student feel that they can talk to us about their dietary requirements.

All of our meals are freshly prepared using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers, including free range eggs. The school kitchen also uses produce grown in school and encourages the children to taste them.

We are increasingly concerned about the health and fitness of children.  Hence we aim for a much more balanced diet at school lunchtime. We award a Healthy Eating Certificate each week in assembly and encourage healthy snacks at break. Children should not bring sweets to school.

The kitchen staff is fully aware of food allergies and advise parents and careers to let us know if your child has an allergy. Before ordering, please speak to our staff about your requirements.

On a daily basis children may choose a cooked school meal or to bring a packed lunch from home. A menu board helps children to decide. The children alternate between meal sittings on a weekly basis: 1st sitting 12.00, 2nd sitting 12.20 approx. A charge is made for school meals. This is currently: £2.20 plus 40p for drinks.

Around 65% of the children have a school meal and 45% bring a packed lunch. All children sit together for lunch in the dining hall.

If you believe that your child may be eligible for free schools meals please contact the office.

We also provide healthy packed lunches for when the children go on school trips and present a healthy eating certificate each week. Stickers are also given out to children to encourage them to make healthy choices.

During the year we have special promotion and themed lunches to support the school curriculum. Details are published in the school's newsletter.

You can speak to us direct on Parents Evenings, at the Catering Stand at school events such as the summer fair.

Parents are regularly invited to come in to school and have lunch with their children, details are on the school's newsletter.

We welcome any suggestions, comments or feedback.
